Lackawanna County is Pennsylvania’s youngest and last county, established by an act of the state legislature on August 13, 1878, carving out the northern portion of Luzerne County to form a new locality.

Lackawanna County history stretches from Native American settlements through colonial settlers into an industrial boomtown, and the Lackawanna River has always played an important role as both a means of transport and a community resource.

The river shaped the county and was shaped by it, while many early settlers and industrialists left their “names on the land” as they carved out communities in what would become Lackawanna County.

Our presenters are uniquely suited to discuss Lackawanna County’s long history: Willis Conover is a retired history professor and the author of “Labeling Lackawanna: The Stories Behind Lackawanna County Place Names;”

Bernie McGurl is the longtime director of the Lackawanna River Corridor Association; and Ted Baird is an archaeologist associated with the Frances Dorrance chapter of the PA Archaeological Society.

Come join us at the Lackawanna Historical Society’s 2023 Annual Dinner  to celebrate the place we call home with humor, insight, and a few strange and unusual yarns!
